USC Academy players will have something to strive for in 2011.
In addition to the 'Recognition of Excellence' award USC will up the ante by going a step further.
Starting March 2011, players will have the opportunity to compete for a USC scholarship, which will be presented at the end of the 2011 term.
This scholarship will provide the full tuition for the following 2012 season.
The Scholarship program will be in effect for players born 2000 and earlier.
Only one player per age group is eligible.
In order to receive this award only players who do well academically are considered. That means a minimum standard of a 70% average is required.
Klaus Baedorf, president of the USC Academy, feels that it will help the overall academy program.
"It will be a boost academically, because it combines efforts on the field and in the class room."
"At the academy level, we expect players to compete foremost with themselves, to become the best they can be, physically, technically and mentally. The added dimension of academic excellence will be the catalyst to achieve athletic excellence."
Baedorf also points to the fact that the earlier a youth player realizes that soccer and academics go hand in hand, it will give them an edge when it comes to the real challenge: to be considered for a College or University Scholarship.
